life's a party, let's celebrate every day

Mardi Gras

It’s Make it Monday! Mardi Gras celebrations fill the streets of New Orleans every year, culminating in a big party on Fat Tuesday (a literal translation from French… "Mardi"=”Tuesday,” and “Gras”=”fat.”) In honor of Mardi Gras and Make it Monday, here’s a recipe for King Cake inspired by Paula Deen. Gather your ingredients today so you can be ready to celebrate!

King Cake Cupcakes (inspired by Paula Deen)

(makes 12)

3/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar

1/2 cup chopped pecans (we leave these out)

1 bag semi-sweet chocolate chips

1 tsp ground cinnamon

3 (8 oz) cans refrigerated crescent rolls

1 cup confectioners' sugar

2 Tbsp milk

1 can of your favorite vanilla frosting

Green, purple & yellow sprinkles

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line a 12-cup cupcake pan with cupcake liners.

  • Combine brown sugar, cinnamon and pecans (we leave these out and use chocolate chips instead.)

  • On a lightly floured surface, unroll each can of crescent rolls.

  • Separate each can into 4 rectangles. Press perforations to seal.

  • Sprinkle about 2 Tbsp brown sugar mixture down the center of each rectangle, leaving a border around the edges.

  • 1 rectangle at a time, fold the sides of the rectangle into the center.

  • Place dough folded side up into the cupcake pan.

  • Repeat procedure with remaining rectangles.

  • Bake for 18-22 minutes or until brown.

  • *Whisk confectioners' sugar and milk until smooth. Drizzle over warm cakes.

  • Sprinkle with green, purple, & yellow sprinkles.

*store bought frosting works too!

Traditionally, one tiny plastic baby toy is put into the cake and the person who finds it gets crowned “king.” We always put a baby on top of all of the cupcakes as decoration (after they are baked, of course.) It’s fun for the whole crew to be lucky winners.

While the cupcakes are baking, the kids can decorate a free printable mask.  These are best printed on cardstock.  Use sticker gems and feathers and any other craft supplies you have on hand.  After the masks are decorated, use a sturdy straw (not a bendy straw) or a chopstick as a mask handle.

Here are some green and purple finds that work for a Mardi Gras celebration, or any other day! These are basically the only sweatshirts my fifth grader will wear. Check out GOAT USA.
